Indian Spice Train

Date of Visit: July 27, 2017
President: Brad T.
The Show: 14
The Score: 8.5

The pre-game festivities were like usual, of light attendance.  The usual suspects began by ordering a round and talking of weekend plans.  Spirits were high in anticipation of what we’ve all come to enjoy from Curry Club; excellent curry, posh décor, and fellowship.

As usual, the Indian Spice Train staff had our tables readily available with pre-poured waters, strategically placed chutney’s, and plates for complimentary poppadoms.  Immediately the pent up excitement let out in conversations and roar of laughter.  The president thwarted a stoning by the group on member Joni L. for a late arrival, yellow card issued as a warning not to waste the group’ time.  The evening kicked off with a cold drink in each man’s hand, holding high, to honor the great Alan Patten.

The Indian Spice Train continues to impress with its Indian themed atmosphere and heavenly smells of curry wafting throughout the room.  Multiple orders for shorba and Indian beers could be heard throughout.  The president began quickly to dispense of club business as to be relieved of the pressures of duty that come with the jacket.  Members voted 13:1 to remove pledge Tyler S. from consideration as he has never attended a meeting.  Member JJ W. was the only member opposed to this ruling and was given a “don’t be that guy” look from the president.  A Yellow card was given to member Joni L. for his late arrival and lack of concern for the group’s time.  Lastly, a Red card was issued to Member Leom H. for attempting to carry-over a Red card against another member for inviting his brother.  No facts could be recalled due to the length of time that had passed since the offense.  We expect member Leom H. to abide by the decision of the president and the powers bequeathed to him by the jacket.  Bribery is welcomed.

At this point in the evening main courses have been ordered and we’re beginning to be served.  Kashmiri kulcha, garlic naan, and paneer kulcha of large sizes began arriving along with bountiful bowls of basmati rice.  Eventually followed by bowls of varying curries; Masalas, Konkanis, Kormas, and Saags.  One chicken tandoori and a few mango lassis.  Following the meals being served Chef Mike came out to see how everyone was enjoying their dishes, a well-received gesture.  As the meal went on there was conversations of how good the food was and again praise to the mango lassis.  Perhaps a hidden gem newly discovered by the group.  At the end of the meal and upon checks being delivered it was time to discuss what each member liked and disliked about their meal.  Many positives and high scores could be heard regarding the service, the atmosphere and beautiful art of Indian cavalry soldiers.  A couple comments surrounding spice level could be heard in that it was 1 or 2 heat levels low.  Two orders of naan were overcooked and contained a bit of char on the edges with naan arriving late to dinner.  One person’s meal didn’t make it out to him in time and was comp’d by the Chef.  Numerous praises for the shorba and lassis.  Lastly the price was noted as a bit much by a few members.  It is important to note that this is fine Indian dining and to achieve a high score indicates the qualities in atmosphere, food, and cleanliness.

Summary of Highlights:

Shorba was most excellent

Mango Lassi was the hit of the night for drinks

Ambiance was great

Clean bathrooms

Staff was polite, prompt, and professional

Food and naan were excellent

The first ever Reserved for CASACC seen in the wild

Upon tallying the scores for the evenings dinner it was a unanimous success for Indian Spice Train.  Chef Mike’s restaurant has become the contender for best curry restaurant in Cincinnati 2017.  Immediately conversations of our holiday festivities emerged.  The possibilities are endless with mentions of a Miamisburg club names Cheeks.  Member Rob A. recalls going to Cheeks back in the day when it was just Cheek.  A few members spoke highly of it and it is suggested members check out this venue ahead of time.

With his final act of the evening, President Brad T. called upon his fellow currians to choose a president for August.  It was a close decision, with member Sven. M. being the only volunteer.  Congratulations to him and the powers that come with the jacket.

Glory be to the blazer!

One last note of importance.  Chef Mike caught up with a few of us outside to invite us back so that he may teach us about different types of Indian food and to try it out.  He had noticed we weren’t reaching out for complicated dishes and stuck with typical Indian cuisines.  This is a first and I will take him up on his offer by arranging a side visit for those that are interested.
