Baba India 2019

Date of Visit: June 27, 2019
President: P. Glotzbecker
The Show: 9
The Score: 8.12

CASACC returned to Baba Indian in June, with new member and President Paul Glotzbecker presiding. Having been some time since the group last visited there was interest in revisiting this venue.

Two members, Mark McAuliffe and Ryan Kaplan cancelled last minute. McAuliffe explained it was his “sister-in-law’s 30th birthday today and they are all coming to my house and expected to bring balloons.” President Glotzbecker immediately issued a yellow card citing a lame excuse. Failure to provide a picture of his sister-in-law’s “balloons” at the next meeting will result in another immediate yellow card.

The group met at the Oakley Pub and Grill (OPG) for drinks beforehand. The atmosphere was relaxed with an adequate beer, bourbon and cocktail selection. There was a covered patio with fans making drinks and conversation outdoors pleasant.

About a mile away was Baba Indian. Upon arrival the appearance of the restaurant did not score any points. The exterior building was in disrepair and did not give you the “I want to eat here feeling.” Upon entering the building, it was clear this used to be a 1970’s or 80’s chain restaurant. Hamilton County auditor records revealed the restaurant was a former “Burger Chef.” The interior reflects this- with the exception of a small bar area with an adequate bourbon selection. The bathrooms were clean yet outdated. Adam found the restrooms creepy due to toilet paper stuffed between the cracks of one of the stalls. This calls into question the types of activities being conducted in the men’s room.

The venue easily seated the 9 curry-goers and we went about eating our complimentary poppadoms and perusing the menu. The dining area was somewhat updated with minimal decor. Some members were discouraged by the “Best Indian Restaurant 2007” award still on the wall. Despite this distraction most members were glued to the large flat screen TV playing Bollywood style music videos. While this added much entertainment value, it became apparent drugging wives/girlfriends while visiting your mistress is a common practice.

A wide range of food at different spice levels were ordered as well as beverages. Service was satisfactory although some members felt there was a lack of promptness. Being in a position where I was able to see our waiter, it should be noted he made frequent eye contact in the event something was needed. One cannot help but wonder if this was related to the added privacy in the men’s room stall.

The food arrived in a phased manner- possibly due to the large group and only a few waiters. Comments varied such as ‘delicious’, ‘perfect spice level’, ‘there peas in the rice’ were muttered around the table. The general consensus was that the food was very good, with only one or 2 minor items of feedback. Group consensus suggested Baba Indian was perhaps a better lunch buffet than dinner.

The bills for the food and drinks were presented without error, yet once again there was some delay due to lack of staff. It was suggested that the female bouncers doing nothing but sitting at the door could have helped.

There were no items of business to be discussed- the fine jacket was passed to Matt Butler for the month of July.
