Shaan Indian Cuisine

This months’ expedition took us back to the Hyde Park Plaza – somewhere we had not visited since October 2015 when the Shaan Indian received a modest but respectable mid 7’s score. It was time to give them another shot.

With a few exits from the club over the past couple of months due to general laziness on the parts of the ex members, it was deemed by this month’s President that new faces were needed to bring further diverse views to the club. 3 invites were sent, 2 acceptances were received, 1 new face joined the festivities – more on that later.

Also joining us was our long time honorary member RJ Podder from Dallas. RJ moved to Dallas to set up DASACC, our stetson wearing Dallas branch, but this has not been successful due to the lack of being bothered, and also all they eat in Dallas is crude oil and burgers.

We started our evening in the sunny beer gardens of RP McMurhy’s. I ignored the fact that they claimed to be an Irish bar as I knew that thinking about it would consume me with rage. I instead focussed on rum, while other members (9 met for pre-drinks) enjoyed a wide selection of beers, some of which were at happy hour prices. One member took this opportunity to soak up the sun in his wife beater while showing off his ‘tats’ from his childhood. This isn’t the sort of behaviour expected of CASACC members. This all started as he thought he heard Kaplan shout ‘get your tats out’. Kaplan shouted something close, but it wasn’t that.

We took a 5-minute walk in the sun to Shaan where we were greeted by the ever-smiling owner. It was a warm welcome and they were ready for us. It’s a BYOB restaurant which always seems to go down well. Shaan is located right next to Kroger for easy alcohol purchases but due to the previous actions of member Hoy he felt obligated to supply the beers. These we well received and consumed by the group.

After the toast to Alison Payton we proceeded on with the complimentary poppadoms. Feedback on these ranged from ‘the best I’ve ever had’ to ‘they were soggy/stale’. Clearly we received a mixed batch. The condiments were well spiced and very tasty, although the green condiment was greener than the messiest parts of ghostbusters. Upon questioning the owner named one of the key ingredients as food coloring. This was a surprise to no one at the table.

The general consensus was that the atmosphere was great; the restaurant was busy, not too noisy, had a good smell and an all-round good vibe. Member Menninger highly complemented the place because of the attendance of 3 of his FC Cincinnati heroes. You could tell there was a little apprehension from the local soccer stars as they recognised Sven as being the guy that sits outside their house in his van. They didn’t hang around for long, to the disappointment of Sven and his camera.

The mains were ordered and came out in good time. Choices ranged from the usual tikka masala and vindaloo to vegetarian chick pea dishes. Credit for the latter goes to new member Heekin who is bringing back the non-meat dishes to the club – diversity at its finest. Heekin truly is an excellent addition to the club, unlike the other 2 that were invited and didn’t come. Feedback on the mains was that they were excellent. Good quantity curries, great flavours, and excellent naans. In fact the naans were some of the best we have had all year.

One complaint from our tattooed member (Butler) was that the potato and chicken chunks were too big, not allowing the flavours to marinate throughout. It’s a fair and well thought-out point, one that you wouldn’t expect from someone with such poor taste in tattoos.

The prices were excellent – coming in at around $12-$14 a meal, certainly one of the lowest of the year. We could have had even cheaper prices had we used their online discounts, but we chose not to use them.

In summary, truly excellent value, and the best curry house we have visited in 2018 so far.

Other notes:

  • Jacob Dixon was voted an honorary member due to his work commitments – Jacob, like Podder, Taggart etc. can join whenever they are able to. Unless we change our minds of course.
  • Mr Heekin was unanimously voted in using the club’s secret voting techniques
  • The Convington Pub Crawl will take place on Friday August 17th – all CASACC members and friends invited
