This event began with a trek across state lines, deep into the interior of the Bluegrass state of Kentucky. Destination curry unknown, city of Newport. The happy hour kicked off on the patio of Hofbräuhaus where the weather was comfortable and the company enjoyable. Although an abrupt change in the weather, most likely brought on by member Holley’s sudden movement to not partake in any libations for the evening, sent us inside to escape the oncoming monsoon, yet it did not dampen our spirits.
The show took place at Amol India Carry Out a small restaurant with seating for about 15 people. This adventure brought a few firsts for the club; one being our first visit to a Kentucky curry restaurant, and two being a “carry out” curry restaurant. In my search for new curry restaurants I stumbled across numerous reviews mentioning Amol India Carry Out and thus led me to believe we needed to investigate as there is only one true review and that’s a CASACC review!
Typically, the words “carry out” in a restaurants name indicate low quality, fast food. This is one exception where the rule doesn’t apply. Albeit a restaurant designed primarily for take-out, with zero ambiance and lack of seating it did accommodate our club of 7 nicely. The meal started with drinks and complimentary poppadum’s. The spicy onion chutney had a good hot heat with the sauce being more of a paste texture than we’re used to seeing. President Taggart ordered two sampler plates with Indian cheese, chicken pakora and samosa’s for sharing and as an initial evaluation of what to expect. Again, member Holley failed to order an adult beverage which is frowned upon by President Taggart’s court. Amol India offered the normal selection of fine Indian beer and with quantities that satisfied. At this time, we paid honor to Mr. Allen Patten with a toast of man’s pinnacle of adult beverages and Member Holley’s water glass.
Amol India has choice of heat level ranging from 1 thru 10. Most CASACC members being of high caliber and of strong intestinal fortitude placed orders for levels 5 and up. Member Amos ordered a disappointing level of 2. Member Amos, please do try and correct yourself. A range of dishes were ordered from chicken curry, tandoori, lamb and vindaloo. Amol India has a large menu with a great online presence and mobile food ordering app. There are 17 choices for naan alone, with Kashmiri naan being a favorite. The meals arrived at the same time, hot and with plenty of rice. All members agreed that the naan was excellent, prices were great and service was good. There was one issue with Member Amos’s dinner in that the korma was not flavorful. The only negatives, in my opinion, related to the nature of the business being a carry out. The restaurant lacks complete ambiance with no music, and minimal Indian décor. It’s very cramped but did offer enough seating for our club and a few other guests. Amol India had a steady stream of patrons and pick-up orders while we were there, creating a bit of public dining experience.
Holding office of the CASACC president comes with great responsibility and with that responsibility its power must be executed swiftly and deservingly as is such in the following cases. It should be noted this type of behavior is unbecoming of a fine modern day currysman.
- Member Poddar accused for accepting and declining to show within the allowed amount of time and by using a lame last minute deliverable excuse. Punishment: YELLOW CARD
- Member Eslinger accused for accepting and declining to show within the allowed amount of time. Punishment: YELLOW CARD
- Member Murray accused of ignoring official CASACC correspondence and not responding at all. Punishment: YELLOW CARD
After dinner picture is attached and next month’s president was elected. Congratulations Aaron Hoy on his 2nd attempt to hold office!
